Periodontitis is the loss of bone and tissue that support the teeth due to plaque and tartar buildup and other conditions. Gum pockets are created that are difficult to keep clean and accumulate more bacteria and toxins. This leads to further destruction of the bone and gum and can lead to loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. It is estimated by the Center of Disease Control that one out of every two American adults aged 30 and over has periodontal disease.
